PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a phenol resin-based ultrafine fiber having the same characteristics such as heat resistance, flame retardancy, chemical resistance and the like as a conventional phenol resin-based fiber, and further having extremely ultrafine fiber diameter compared to that of the conventional one; to provide a phenol resin-based ultrafine carbon fiber and a phenol resin-based ultrafine active carbon fiber obtained by carbonizing the fiber or further activating the fiber after the carbonization; and to provide a method for producing them.;SOLUTION: The conjugate fiber comprising polystyrene resins as the sea component and a phenol resin as the island component is obtained by dissolving the phenol resin and the polystyrene resins with an organic solvent capable of dissolving both thereof, evaporating and removing the solvent therefrom to provide a compounded resin, forming the compounded resin into a fiber by a melt-spinning method. The phenol resin-based ultrafine fiber is obtained by selectively dissolving and removing only the polystyrene resins of the second component in the conjugate fiber by using the solvent. The phenol resin-based ultrafine carbon fiber and the phenol resin-based ultrafine activated carbon fiber are obtained by carbonizing and thereafter activating the conjugate fiber.
