PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical fiber which exhibits a small increment of loss due to an OH group and is suitable for transmitting signals in a band including a wavelength of 1,380 nm, an optical fiber preform used for the optical fiber and a method of manufacturing a fluorine-added silica glass body.;SOLUTION: The fluorine-added silica glass body is manufactured through (1) a process for obtaining a silica glass soot deposited body by depositing the silica glass soot and (2) a process for heating the deposited body in an atmosphere containing a 1st gas containing at least fluorine atoms and a 2nd gas having reducing property and containing no fluorine atoms nor hydrogen atoms. The optical fiber is obtained by drawing the optical fiber preform obtained using the glass body or working the fluorine added silica glass body to make a glass pipe, inserting a separately prepared glass rod into the pipe and drawing while integrating. The optical fiber has a clad containing fluorine and exhibits a transmission loss of 0.32 dB/km or less at a wavelength of 1,380 nm.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
