PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an small-sized and high-performance optical device which uses photonic crystal and to determine the angle of incidence of a light beam on the photonic crystal for the purpose of obtaining a large angle of deflection of the light beam.;SOLUTION: This optical device is equipped with the photonic crystal designed to have a dispersion surface shape for large direction dependency at a certain frequency and a light input means for making the light beam whose wavelength is determined by the frequency incident on the photonic crystal at an angle of incidence determined based upon the rule of conservation of momentum from an area where the direction dependency greatly varies with the dispersion surface shape. In this case, when energy is imparted to the photonic crystal from outside, the dispersion surface shape of the photonic crystal changes to deflect the light beam incident on the photonic crystal at an angle of deflection which is tens of to hundreds of times as large as that of an ordinary optical material.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
