Method for identifying fungicides (Q) from the ability of test compounds to inhibit specifically the biological activity of a peptide (I) that has inosine monophosphate (IMP) dehydrogenase (IMPDH) activity. ??Independent claims are also included for: ??(1) Fungicides identified by the new method; ??(2) Nucleic acid (II) that encodes IMPDH from a phytopathogenic fungus; ??(3) DNA construct that contains (II); ??(4) Vector that contains (II) or the construct of (3); ??(5) Host cell that contains (II), the construct of (3) or the vector of (IV); ??(6) Polypeptide (Ia) from phytopathogenic fungi having IMPDH activity and encoded by (II); ??(7) Antibodies that bind specifically to (Ia); ??(8) Methods for preparing (II); ??(9) Method for preparing (Ia) by culturing cells of (5) or by expressing (II) in an in vitro system; and ??(10) Method for identifying compounds that alter expression of (Ia).
