PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a scanning type picture display device capable of restraining the loss of light quantity in an optical branching means even in the case of using a comparatively large optical scanning means and a reflection type light diffusing means, and to provide an optical system used for the display device.;SOLUTION: This optical system has a scanning optical system having a scanning means for making luminous flux from a light source scan at a scanning point and a display optical system. The scanning optical system and the display optical system are constituted so that their optical paths are partially overlapped, and also separated by a separation means. The scanning optical system is characterized by forming a conjugate point conjugate to the scanning point at a position nearly overlapped on the position of the separation means.
