PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely reduce the mosquito noise which is apt to occur around the edges of a reproduced image obtained by decoding image data coded in a block unit coding, without adversely influencing the edges of the reproduced image.;SOLUTION: A noise reducer 14 decides whether excels to be filtered are those constituting the edge, based on the edge presence detecting information fed from an edge detector 13, and, if they are those pixels constituting the edge, it does not filter them. If they are decided as not being these pixels constituting the edge, it obtains the distance between the pixels to be filtered and the nearest adjacent edge thereto, and the intensity of the nearest adjacent edge, based on the edge existence detection information and edge intensity information; and selects edge-conserved type smoothing filter characteristics usable for filter processings, according to the distance obtained and the intensity.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
