PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a perpendicular magnetic recording medium, provided with a Fe-based amorphous soft magnetic film having high saturation magnetic flux density, low coercive force, superior surface flatness and superior thermal stability and to provide a perpendicular magnetic recording medium provided with an exchange coupling type backing layer effective for reduction of spike noise.;SOLUTION: The perpendicular magnetic recording medium is provided with at least a backing layer and a vertical magnetic recording layer on a non-magnetic substrate, and the backing layer is constituted of the soft magnetic film, having a composition of (Fex-Co(1-x))k-(Siy-Ge(1-y))l-Bm-Cn (where x, y, k, l, m and n are atomic fractions and x≥0.7, y≥0.5, 0.74≤k≤0.80, 0.05≤l≤0.20, 0.05≤m≤0.21, n≤0.1 and k+l+m+n=1 are satisfied).;COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
