PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compound surface reforming method capable of maintaining wear resistance, lubricity, surface reforming, etc., for a long period of time.;SOLUTION: Base material surfaces of portions to be formed with carbon-based hard films of various articles to be treated, such as dies, cutting tools, sliding parts, fixtures and tools, cutware, ornamental parts, gears and bearings, are subjected to base material pretreatment to diffuse the carbon element in carbide powder near to the surfaces of the articles to be treated by injecting the carbide powder in such a manner that the amount of the carbon decreases gradually toward the interior from the extreme surface. When the carbon-based hard films are formed by methods, such as PVD and CVD, on the articles to be treated which are completed of the base material pretreatment, the carbon in the films and the carbon diffused at the time of the base material pretreatment are assimilated and the secure tight adhesion of the hard films is obtained.
