PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for simply detecting the potency of a soil fumigant by detecting the potency of the soil fumigant on the chemical change of a metal caused by its contact with the soil fumigant, and to provide a potency-detecting agent used therefor. ;SOLUTION: When a soil is treated with the agrochemical ingredient of a soil fumigant, a metal or a composition containing a metal is charged in the soil, between the soil and a covering material or in the covering material, and the potency of the fumigant is detected by the chemical change of the metal. The agrochemical ingredient is preferably trichloronitromethane, sodium methyldithiocarbamate, ammonium methyl dithiocarbamate, methyl iodide or carbon disulfide. The metal is preferably either one of Al, tin, copper and zinc or an alloy containing two or more kinds of the metals. The potency-detecting agent is preferably a coating, laminate film or vacuum-deposited film which contains the metal.
