PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce ghost-like contour noise in a mobile picture by controlling the light emitting of a sub-field corresponding to a television picture signal with specified regularity. SOLUTION: The television picture signal converted into a digital binary code by an A/D converter 101 is converted into a signal matching the gradation display of a plasma television by a bit subfield converter 109. This encoded signal is temporarily stored in a frame memory 102. Then the television picture signal read from the frame memory 102 is serially/parallelly converted through a shift register 105, converted into a high-voltage pulse by a driver 106 and impressed to the auxiliary electrode of a plasma display panel 110. The light emitting of a subfield is controlled corresponding to the presence/absence of a writing pulse impressed to the auxiliary electrode. Consequently, The presence/ absence of this writing pulse is controlled corresponding to the television picture signal so as to control the light emitting of the subfield.
