PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a photopolymerizable composition for obtaining a holographic polymer-dispersion-type liquid crystal(HDPLC) having a structure comprising alternately laminated polymer layers and liquid crystal layers. ;SOLUTION: A polymerization initiator, a sensitizing pigment, at least one polymerizable compound, and at least one polymerization retarder are incorporated into a photopolymerizable composition for a liquid crystal/ photopolymerizable composition (a mixed composition) for forming an HDPLC layer 7 of a liquid crystal display element. The light absorption of the photopolymerizable composition due to the sensitizing pigment contained is 2% or higher at the wavelength of incident light. The photopolymerizable composition is photopolymerized by the irradiation with light vertical to glass plates 1, 2. The spatial distribution of at least one physical quantity selected from density, refractive index, unevenness, and orientation state is formed as a fine pattern. Therefore, the refractive index distribution and periodical structure based on the pattern are formed in the resultant liquid crystal/polymer composite material.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2001,JPO
