PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the cell having a large discharge capacity and excellent safety and also to provide the production of a cobalt oxide material (cobalt oxide-based multiple oxide) contained in a positive electrode of the cell. SOLUTION: This production comprises subjecting a multiple oxide represented by the formula LiPCo1- YMYOZ (wherein: 0.9P=1.1; 0=Y0.5; 1.9=Z=2.1; and M is at least one element selected from transition elements other than cobalt, or other group IIIB, IVB, and VB elements) to acid treatment to eliminate all or part of lithium atoms from the multiple oxide and to produce another multiple oxide (i.e., the objective cobalt oxide material) represented by the formula LiXCo1- YMYOZ (0=X=0.6), wherein after the lithium elimination treatment, a drying process is performed at =150 deg.C. Also, the cell using a positive electrode 6 that contains this cobalt oxide material can be provided. Thus, the production of the cobalt oxide material capable of receiving cations can be provided to enable realization of the cell having a large discharge capacity, excellent safety and such advantage that the cells can be utilized in various application fields, i.e., power sources of various kinds of portable electronic equipment, etc.
