Water is supplied to an aeration chamber (5) from a pre- sedimentation chamber (4) via a flow control device (8) comprising a trough with its base region connected via a first pipe to the pre-sedimentation chamber and via a second pipe to a lower region of the aeration chamber. The flow control device includes a first means for regulating the flow of water from the trough into the second pipe so long as the level of water in the trough lies between a given lower level and a given upper level, in addition to a second means for removing water above the upper level to the second pipe. A given ratio between the maximum water flows obtainable via the first and second flow regulating means is maintained. A water purification installation comprises a tank (1) with a volume less than 100 m3 and containing at least one internal wall (2, 3) for creating a pre-sedimentation chamber and an aeration chamber. The tank has an inlet (7) for supplying effluent to the pre-sedimentation chamber, a means for supplying water to the aeration chamber from the pre-sedimentation chamber and an outlet (9) for water in the aeration chamber. The means for supplying water to the aeration chamber from the pre-sedimentation chamber comprises a flow control device with a trough, the base region of which is connected via a first pipe to the pre-sedimentation chamber. The trough is also connected to a second pipe for supplying water to a lower region of the aeration chamber and water is prevented from flowing into the second pipe so long as the water in the trough does not exceed a minimum level. The flow control device includes a first means for regulating the flow of water from the trough into the second pipe so long as the level of water in the trough lies between a given lower level and a given upper level, in addition to a second means for removing water above the upper level to the second pipe. The ratio between the maximum water flow obtainable via the first flow regulating means and the maximum water flow obtainable via the second flow regulating means is less than 0.2 (less than 0.1). An independent claim is also included for a method for at least partially purifying effluent from one or more houses using this installation.
