The clarification of wastewater in a small-scale sewage treatment plant, comprises aerating the collected wastewater in post clarification chamber by an aerator within a cycle in defined time intervals and decreasing the switch-on times of the aerator during the cycle. The time intervals between the aeration phases are decreasing or increasing. The switch-on times of the aerator are empirically determined and are decreased around the same length. An independent claim is included for aerator for aerating collected wastewater in post clarification chamber in a small sewage treatment plant.
