A surface coating method for depositing a chemically bonded ceramic coating onto a substrate comprising the steps of: preparing a curable coating slurry, depositing a slurry coating on at least one section of the substrate surface, and hardening the fluid paste. According to the invention the step of preparing a curable coating slurry comprises mixing the calcium aluminate powder with water and at least one water reducing agent such that the water-to-cement ratio is achieved. in the range 0.1 to 0.9. The invention further relates to a biocompatible surface coating with a calcium aluminate hydrate binder phase and a device coated with such a biocompatible surface coating.
