The present invention relates to a novel crystalline form IV atorvastatin the chemical name of which is hemi calcium salt of [R-(Re*,Re*)]-2-(4-fluorophenyl)- {beta},{delta}-dihydroxy-5-(1-methyl-ethyl)-3-phenyl-4-(phenylamino)carbonyl]-1H-pyrrole-1-heptanoic acid, which is characterized by its X-ray powder diffraction and/or solid state NMR and which is useful as a pharmaceutical agent. The invention further relates to pharmaceutical compositions containing such a crystalline form and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier, as well as the use of the invented crystalline form IV atorvastatin in medicine.
