The present invention relates to sugar beet plants, which are resistant to imidazolinone herbicides. The sugar beet plants are derived from susceptible cells by selection for mutant imidazolinone resistant cells with the herbicide. The resistant plants derived from the cells can be grown in fields where imidazolinones have been used for weed control.
