A hybrid drive system has a current generating system (3) with a combustion engine (1), which drives a three-phase current generator (2), which transfers its generated electrical energy to a DC voltage link (4) which transfers the electrical energy via one- or more inverters (6) to the drive lift and auxiliary motors (7-9) and is connected to a static electric energy reservoir (10). An electronic device (15) control the individual components and units and is connected to the DC voltage link (4) and to a further electric energy reservoir, which is designed as a temporary power store (12) and consists of one or more interconnected ultra capacitors (13). An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a hybrid drive system.
