The automotive drive system has a series-coupled two-motor drive (23) having: a first motor (20) having a first set of windings and a second set of windings; and a second motor (21) having a third set of windings, the third set of windings is coupled to the first set of windings and the second set of windings; a first inverter (38) coupled to the first set of windings; and a second inverter (40) coupled to the second set of windings. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling a six-phase motor and a three-phase motor coupled in series using a double-ended inverter system.
