The reaction is carried out using a regenerative heat exchanger (1) with at least one compartment (2, 3) containing a bed of catalyst particles (10). A first flow of reaction mixture fluid and a second flow of reaction mixture are passed through or over the bed alternately. The first flow donates heat to the bed and the second flow removes heat from the bed. The first and/or second flow comprises a reaction mixture which gives off heat or absorbs heat during reaction : A method for generating a chemical reaction involves using a regenerative heat exchanger comprising at least one compartment and connection means for placing the heat exchanger in at least two pipe systems (4-7). The compartment contains a bed of particulate material and a first flow of fluid and a second flow of fluid are passed through or over the bed alternately. The first flow donates heat to the bed and the second flow removes heat from the bed. The first and/or second flow comprises a reaction mixture which gives off heat or absorbs heat during the chemical reaction. An independent claim is also included for an apparatus for carrying out the above method, in which at least one compartment contains a catalyst bed of particulate material for catalyzing the chemical reaction.
