The detector is used to determine the number of circuits executed by a skater on a rink and ascertains whether the outer bent leg of the skater is in front of the inner bent leg, known as 'leg over' in sports jargon. Through correct electronic involvement in the detector inter alia the number of skating circuits can be determined. The detector itself comprises a transmitter and a receiver. For direct detection, the transmitter is fixed to one leg and the receiver to the other. For reflected detection, the transmitter and receiver are fixed to the same leg. In both cases, the transmitter and receiver are so placed that the receiver receives the transmitter signal if the outer bent leg is located in a defined sector for the inner bent leg. The transmitter transmits a signal which is acoustic or electro-magnetic. The signal can be modulated and/or intermittent.
