A process for converting hydrogen sulfide to elemental sulfur, the process comprising the steps of: (a) introducing a feed gas comprising hydrogen sulfide into a first reactor comprising a sorbent sulfated solid oxide, wherein the gas feed is contacted with the sorbent sulfated solid oxide under conditions sufficient to convert the hydrogen sulfide and sulfated solid oxide into a product mixture comprising a first vapor phase product and a product in the solid phase comprising the first product vapor phase vapor elemental sulfur, water vapor and sulfur dioxide, the product comprising solid phase desulfated solid oxide, posing the first vapor phase product from the first reactor along with sulfur nitrogen unreacted as effluent, and retained at least a portion of the solid phase product in the first reactor; (B) passing the effluent of step (a) into a condenser operated under conditions sufficient to condense at least a portion of the elemental sulfur to liquid sulfur, whereby a product liquid sulfur is obtained and a second product is formed vapor phase comprising the second product sulfur vapor and hydrogen sulfide phase, posing the second vapor phase product from the condenser; (C) passing the second vapor phase product from step (b) with a source of oxygen to a burner which operates under conditions sufficient to convert substantially all of the sulfur and hydrogen sulfide contained in the second phase product steam from step (b) in a combustion product comprising sulfur oxides, the conditions comprising a greater amount of oxygen than the stoichiometric; and (d) passing the remainder of the combustion product of step (c) into a second reactor comprising a solid oxide under conditions sufficient to combine the sulfur oxides from step (c) with the solid oxide in the second reactor, producing thereby a solid phase product and a product treated vapor phase product-containing vapor phase treated less than 50 ppm of sulfur oxides, the product comprising solid phase a sulfated solid oxide, posing the vapor phase product treated from the second reactor and retained at least a portion of the solid phase product in the second reactor; wherein said process operates in cycles such that after the capacity of the sorbent bed is exhausted sulfate, the positions of the first reactor (a) and the second reactor (d) are switched via valve changes.
