An expression cassette consisting of a region of latency-associated transcript (LAT) P2 of the herpes simplex virus (HSV) consisting of the nucleotides of HSV type 1 118.866-120.219 or a fragment or derivative thereof that is capable of giving expression in the long term of a heterologous gene in the cassette, a first promoter and a first heterologous gene operatively linked in that order.
