A hierarchical structure generating method and apparatus used in acommunication system (for example, consisting of a parent station B and Nchildstations (relay station R or terminal station T) is disclosed, by which thewholehierarchical structure can be efficiently generated and displayed from the toplevel basedon a parent-child relationship table between the constituent stations. Theapparatuscomprises a section (100) for referring to a parent-child relationship table(10) indicatingeach parent-child relationship between the elements, and generating andoutputting ahierarchical structure display table (11) which includes at least informationfordetermining whether each element is a parent element; information fordeterminingwhether each parent element is a top parent element; information fordetermining a childelement of each parent element; and information for determining another childelementhaving the same hierarchical level of each child element, so as to analyze thehierarchical structure; and a section (200) for generating and displaying thehierarchicalstructure of the elements by referring to the hierarchical structure displaytable.
