The present invention provides an absorbent articlewhich combines a hydrophobic topsheet with a good liquidacquisition performance. The absorbent article of thepresent invention comprises a topsheet, a backsheet, aliquid storage structure intermediate the topsheet and thebacksheet, and a liquid handling structure intermediate thetopsheet and the liquid storage structure. The topsheet ofthe present invention has a liquid retention of less than 150mg for a test liquid having a surface tension of 33mN/m.The liquid handling structure of the present invention hasa basis weight to uncompressed caliper ratio of less than100 grams per square meter per millimeter. The topsheetof the present invention may comprise a fiber coating suchas fluoropolymers in order to lower the contact angle of thetopsheet.
