The present invention provides a method and an apparatus for adaptivelyrefining the sampling within an IP network performance monitoring anddiagnosis framework. This ability to adaptively adjust the resolution of thesampling can enable variable accuracy and detail in the related IP networkanalysis. The sampling resolution can be defined as, for example, the load onthe network in terms of the rate of packet transmission, the statisticalvariance thereof and the complexity of the sampling procedure. Each samplingand analysis procedure determines one or more network parameters referred toas critical indicators. Decisions for subsequent sampling and actions are madebased on the determination of these critical indicators. As such, variousevaluation activity levels are defined by conditions that can be checked forand detected within the context of that activity level. A feedback/feedforwardprocess can be used to enhance the resolution of subsequent sampling.
