In a telecommunication system, arithmetic logic unit (ALU) (100) receives an input signal. The input signal includes the digital signal analog signal indicated. The ALU (100) selectively executes compression and decompression to digital signal. The ALU includes following elements. Standard ALU component (102) executes standard ALU operations input signal. Coding unit (104) is selectively carrying out compression to digital signal. Decoding unit (106) is selectively carrying out decompression to digital signal. Instruction decoder (110) receives and decodes ALU instruction. Outlet selector (108) selection come from a standard ALU component (102), coding unit (104), decoding unit (106) according to decoded instruction, and using result as export.
