Isolation of hypotensive active agent (A) from mammalian renal medulla involves: (i) extracting dried renal medulla with organic solvent (I) of dielectric constant 2-45; (ii) chromatographing the extract on hydrophilic sorbent using an eluant gradient from non-polar to polar; and (iii) recovering (A) as extract after removal of eluant. Independent claims are included for: (a) the isolation of a hypertensive active agent (B) from mammalian renal medulla, by steps (i) and (ii) as above, followed by recovering a residue after removal of the eluant and recovering (B) by gel chromatography of the residue using an organic solvent (II) of dielectric constant 2-45; and (b) the agents (A) and (B) obtained by the above processes.
