Method for transmitting a higher level protocol, TCP/IP, over a field bus in which a slave unit initiates a data transfer by sending an alarm request to a master unit. The master is then able to request further message records from the slave. The master transmits the message records to another slave based on a target address supplied by the first slave. ??The inventive method also relates to further fragmentation of a large data records into smaller data packets that can be transmitted in the operational blocks of the field bus transfer protocol.
