The authors present the results of a comparison between three transport layer protocols made for the US Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) in Dahlgren, Virginia. The three protocols considered are ISO/OSI 8073 (TP-4), Versatile Message Transaction Protocol (VMTP), and Express Transfer Protocol (XTP). A discussion of the services provided by each protocol and theoretical evaluation of the efficiency of the protocols are presented. It is concluded that VMTP is the most efficient in terms of network traffic. XTP is the most general of the three and provides the most services. TP-4 appears to be the least efficient and the most limited of the three transport protocols.
