The invention relates to the calibration of a sensor (an optical sensor) (9) in an appliance for measuring co-ordinates, said sensor measuring in at least one dimension. A calibration ball having a known radius (rK) is provided in the measuring region of the appliance for measuring co-ordinates, and the central point (pK) of the calibration ball in the machine co-ordinate system (XM,YM,ZM) is determined; points on the surface of the calibration ball are measured, measuring values being recorded over large parts of the measuring region in every dimension which can be measured by the sensor (9); parameters of a first parameter field are determined, said field describing the transformation (rotation) of the sensor co-ordinate system (u, v, w) in the machine co-ordinate system, and parameters of a second parameter field are determined, said second field describing the shift (vector) of the sensor co-ordinate system in relation to a point (AB) (in the measuring arm) in the machine co-ordinate system.
