Process and apparatus for transforming and using byproducts of the dairy industry

In a process to convert surplus dairy products, whey is anaerobically fermented to generate biogas (3) for combustion in a combined heat and power generator. Prior to fermentation, dissolved matter e.g. calcium, magnesium, phosphate is removed from the whey protein by reduction. Prior to fermentation the whey is diluted with water or effluent water. Fermentation takes place at a temperature of 35 to 40C. Reduction of the dissolved substances is by an increase of the pH value and/or ion exchange, electrolysis, centrifuge, admixture of caustic soda, followed by filtration. Also claimed is a commensurate assembly.
