PURPOSE: A recording/reproducing device and a recording/reproducing method are provided to detect a reproduction signal quality by recording/reproducing test patterns, and to execute the detecting process many times while changing offset values, thereby deciding an optimum offset point with very high accuracy. CONSTITUTION: A recording/reproducing device(100) comprises as follows. A magnetic head(115) is used to generate an external electric field. A magnetic head driver(116) controls the generation of the electric field. An optical head(117) consists of a biaxial apparatus, a photo detector, and a matrix amplifier for driving an objective lens in focus direction and tracking direction. A laser driver(118) drives an emission of a semiconductor laser of the optical head(117). A laser power controller(119) controls a laser emission driving level for the laser driver(118).
