PURPOSE: A microorganism Sphingomonas sp. SB5 degrading an aromatic ring of carbofuran is provided, which microorganism degrades other aromatic compounds as well as carbofuran, so that it can be useful for purification of environment contaminated with dioxin. CONSTITUTION: The microorganism Sphingomonas sp. SB5(KACC 91024) degrades an aromatic ring of carbofuran, wherein Sphingomonas sp. SB5(KACC 91024) is isolated from the soil contaminated with carbofuran; Sphingomonas sp. SB5(KACC 91024) degrades dibenzodioxin as a precursor of dioxin as well as carbamate family; Sphingomonas sp. SB5(KACC 91024) is cultured in a medium containing 7.5g of KH2PO4, 0.5g of NaCl, 0.2g of MgSO4.7H2O, 0.02g of CaCl2.2H2O, 0.2g of carbofuran, 20mg of Na2MoO4.2H2O, 50mg of H2BO3, 30mg of ZnCl2, 10mg of CuCl2 and 20mg of FeCl3 at pH 7.
