PURPOSE: Provided are an electromagnetic wave absorbing material which shows an excellent electromagnetic wave absorbing property at a high frequency range of 1-5 GHz and has a small thickness, and a method for controlling the characteristic frequency of the absorbing material. CONSTITUTION: The electromagnetic wave absorbing material is obtained by dispersing a magnetic material obtained by mixing an amorphous material and a ferrite material, in a resin binder. Preferably the amorphous material is a Fe-Si-B, Fe-Si-B-Cu-Nb, Fe-Ni-Si-B, Ni-Si-B, Fe-Ni-Mo-B, Fe-Co-Si-B, Fe-Co-Cr-Si-B, Fe-Co-Ni-Nb-Si-B, or Co-Fe-Si-B-based powder or flake-shaped amorphous metal material prepared by a quenching method; and the ferrite material is at least one powdered material selected from Ni-Zn, Mn-Mg and Mn-Zn-based materials. The characteristic frequency of the absorbing material is controlled by changing the volume fraction of the amorphous material.
