PURPOSE: To provide a steel for cutting tool which removes demerits of the prior art such as high alloy and material costs, has very excellent compatibility by alloy treatment technology for cutting tool, and accomplishes high economic efficiency. CONSTITUTION: The steel for cutting tool comprises 0.88 to 1.12 wt.% of C, 3.4 to 4.5 wt.% of Cr, 2.5 to 3.0 wt.% of Mo, 0.7 to 1.0 wt.% of V, 0.04 to 0.1 wt.% of Al, 0.02 to 0.12 wt.% of N, and the balance of Fe, and tramp and impure elements, wherein the steel for cutting tool comprises one or more elements selected from 0.93 to 1.07 wt.% of C, 0.15 to 0.42 wt.% of Si, 0.15 to 0.44 wt.% of Mn, up to 0.03 wt.% of P, 0.001 to 0.3 wt.% of S, 0.05 to 0.07 wt.% of Al, and 0.03 to 0.1 wt.% of N, and wherein a ratio of Al/N is 0.5 to 1.9.
