PURPOSE: An electronic device and a method for updating authentication information are provided to increase design freedom of a recording apparatus by using various formats of communication techniques. CONSTITUTION: An electronic device for updating authentication information includes a communicator(39), an authenticator(50), an authentication information memory(44), an authentication input member(48), a buffer memory, and an updating controller. The communicator communicates with an external electronic device via a data bus. The authenticator establishes a communication state by conducting an authentication process with the external electronic device. The buffer memory stores the authentication information inputted from the communicator. The updating controller checks content of the authentication information stored in the buffer memory and updates the authentication information according to a result of the checking operation.
