PURPOSE: To provide a method and an apparatus for destroying pathogenic bacteria and complex organic substances in sludge or wastewater generated during treatment of domestic wastewater and industrial wastewater by using a microwave, and increasing efficiency of a sludge stabilization process to minimize an amount of sludge and increase a recovery ratio of energy such as methane. CONSTITUTION: The apparatus for treating sludge using microwave comprises a preheating facility(1) for increasing temperature of the non-treated sludge or wastewater by passing non-treated sludge or wastewater flown in through a heat exchanger heated by high temperature sludge passing through the microwave irradiation chamber; an inflow pipe(2) through which sludge or wastewater moved from the preheating facility passes; a distribution pipe(6) for uniformly distributing sludge or wastewater flown in through the inflow pipe; a microwave irradiation chamber(7) which is connected to the distribution pipe, on an inner part of which a wedge type agitator is mounted, on an upper portion of which microwave generators(8) are installed with being parallel to the microwave irradiation chamber, and on the outer surface of which a microwave barrier(9) is installed; a collection pipe(10) for collecting sludge or wastewater passing through the microwave irradiation chamber; and an exit pipe(14) for discharging the collected sludge or wastewater.
