PURPOSE: An adapter is provided to suppress power loss caused due to unnecessary operations of the adapter when a power cord of the adapter is coupled with an external power source while the adapter is not coupled with an external device by sensing a connection with the external device. CONSTITUTION: An adapter includes an AC/DC converter(102), an SMPS(Switched Mode Power Supply) controller(107), a connector(104), and a monitor device. The AC/DC converter converts an AC source from outside to a DC source. The SMPS controller performs SMPS switching on the AC/DC converter. The connector couples the output voltage of the AC/DC converter with an external device. The monitor device checks whether a connector of the external device is coupled with the connector and applies a monitor signal to the SMPS controller.
