A multi-chamber type air conditioner system and a method for controlling the same are provided to guarantee continuous heating operation while effectively carrying out defrosting operation, thereby keeping a desired room temperature during the defrosting operation. A multi-chamber type air conditioner system includes a common heat exchanger for outdoor unit, an operation conversion part, a frost determining part, and a control part(20). The operation conversion part converts operations of first and second refrigerant circuits between cooling and heating modes. The frost determining part determines whether frost is stuck to the heat exchanger by a first refrigerant pipe temperature sensor(11). The first refrigerant pipe temperature sensor detects a temperature of a first refrigerant pipe in the first refrigerant circuit. The control part determines any refrigerant circuit not in operation in the case of defrost. If yes, the control part drives the operation conversion part to operate the non-operating refrigerant circuit in cooling mode for defrosting. The control part determines to remove the frost according to temperature value of a second refrigerant pipe in the second refrigerant circuit by a second refrigerant pipe temperature sensor(12). As the frost is removed, the refrigerant circuit operating in the cooling mode is stopped operating by the controller.
