An adaptive modulation apparatus for multi-antenna transmission using partial channel information and a method therefor are provided to maintain a certain BER(Bit Error Rate) and optimize system productivity by adjusting basic beams, power assignment between the beams, and signal constellation. A constellation selector(10) selects one of constellations according to CSI(Channel State Information) for a wireless communication channel, and maps information bits of a transmission data stream to symbols of the selected constellation to generate a symbol stream. A beam former(12) generates a plurality of coding data streams from the symbol stream. A plurality of transmission antennas(2) output a waveform according to a plurality of the coding data streams.
