New selective inhibition of viral or bacterial neuraminidase

Novel compounds are described. These compounds have groups which have acidic groups, basic groups, substituted amino or N-acyl groups and optionally hydroxylated alkane moieties. Pharmacological compositions containing inhibitors of the invention are also described. Also described are methods of inhibiting neuraminidase in a sample that is believed to contain neuraminidase. Assays for screening conjugates, antibodies, polymers, antigenic substances and neuraminidase activity of labeled compounds of the invention are also described.
