PURPOSE: A heating overload operation control method of an air conditioner used for both heating and cooling is provided to secure smooth heating performance by maximally preventing a compressor from stopping in a heating overload and reducing time to a re-starting time and starting noise in turning off a compressor. CONSTITUTION: A heating overload operation control method of an air conditioner used for both heating and cooling is composed of steps for operating a compressor at a first set value by measuring temperature of an indoor heat exchanger in a heating operation mode; opening a bypass valve of an outdoor heat exchanger if the temperature of the indoor heat exchanger rises and exceeds a second set value after operating the compressor; operating indoor and outdoor fans if the temperature of the indoor heat exchanger exceeds a third set value after opening the bypass valve of the outdoor heat exchanger; controlling operations of the indoor and outdoor fans and closing the bypass valve if the temperature of the indoor heat exchanger is over a fourth set value; stopping the outdoor fan if the temperature of the indoor heat exchanger is over a fifth set value after closing the bypass valve; operating the indoor fan at a maximum RPM(Revolution Per Minute) if the temperature of the indoor heat exchanger is over a sixth set value after stopping the outdoor fan; and stopping the compressor and the indoor fan if the temperature of the indoor heat exchanger is over a seventh set value after operating the indoor fan at the maximum RPM.
