The method uses a manipulable causal model to mathematically represent the respective subscriber line. At least some of the measurable two pole properties, preferably including impedance and/or echo pulse response, of the subscriber line are determined. The mathematical model is approximated to the determined parameters taking into account the determined properties by means of the adjustable model parameters. The transfer function of the respective line is then derived from the approximate model.
