Preparing an aqueous chlorine dioxide solution from hydrochloric acid and chlorite comprises using a less than 1 wt.% aqueous hydrochloric acid solution and a less than 5 wt.% aqueous chlorite solution. Independent claims are also included for: (1) aqueous chlorine dioxide solution prepared as above with a concentration of 2 g/l or less; (2) disinfecting kit for preparing the chlorine dioxide solution, comprising a storage container filled with a less than 1 wt.% aqueous hydrochloric acid solution and a storage container filled with a less than 5 wt.% aqueous chlorite solution.
