The method involves fitting a measurement probe (28) for determining the rotation angle of the probe about at least one axis fixed in space (30,32,34) or relative to the probe in a spatial relationship to at least one step (10) of the escalator, setting the escalator with probe moving from a starting position, detecting the change in rotation angle and/or the angle of the probe and evaluating this to determine at least one geometric parameter. Independent claims are also included for the following: (a) a holder for a measurement probe (b) a carriage for a measurement probe (c) the use of a measurement probe for measuring an escalator (d) and a method of determining the geometric parameters of an escalator.
