The vacuum housing (1) has a wall (9) which is provided with a protective coating (10) at least in a region near the focal point of the x-ray tube in operation of the tube. The protective coating is selected from the following materials: niobium, titanium, zirconium, hafnium, vanadium, tantalum, chromium, molybdenum or tungsten or alloys thereof and/or metallic or non-metallic resin and/or ceramic high temperature material and/or gas turbine coating layers. Independent claims also cover a method of making such a vacuum housing.
