In a process to operate a marine diesel engine with exhaust gas turbocharger operated in conjunction with water injection for NO xreduction, the charge pressure is reduced in the upper load sector by reducing the water supply and partial bleeding of turbocharge air. In a diesel with a turbine turbocharger with adjustable inlet jet ring, the ring is opened in the upper pressure range and part of the exhaust is bled. In addition or alternatively to the reduction in water and air supply, the ignition point is postponed. Also claimed is a commensurate assembly with a variable-throughput water pump (9), a compressor (5), bleed pipe (13), exhaust pipe (2) and turbine (3).
