The hemispherical head (20) for the prosthetic hip joint may be snapped onto the slightly tapered end of an adapter (2). There is a shaft (12) at a slight angle to the adapter, extending through narrow bore (10) in a tapered housing (1) embedded in a bore cut into the bone. The shaft has a threaded end and has a small diameter end (14) extending through the end of the housing (11) and through a bore (13) in the outer layer of bone (40), to the surface. The outside surface of the housing is covered in a three- dimensional openwork mesh (9) into which bone can grow to firmly lock the housing in place.
