A driving device for operating a magnetic actuator or electric switchgear, especially a contactor or relay, equipped with an armature has a receptacle device for receiving or detecting a movement quantity regarding the armature, and/or a contact connected to it. A control device (RG) is provided for controlling a movement quantity of the armature or of the contact. The control device (RG) can control or regulate the acceleration of the armature or of the contact. An independent claim is included for (a) an electrical switching device and for (b) a method for driving a magnetic actuator.
